Laurel District Association announces the annual Lunar New Year community celebration and Lion Dance Parade. Saturday February 18, 2017 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm the event is FREE to the public. Oakland Vice Mayor Annie Campbell Washington kicks off the day honoring Oakland District 4 volunteers during the Annual Local Heroes Ceremony at Laurel Elementary School from 10:00 am – noon. Local heroes have worked tirelessly for the community and are recognized for their contribution and passion to serve others. Immediately following the ceremony will be a Lunar New Year Lion Dance Parade through the Laurel Business District where a traditional Chinese Dragon dance precession will travel down MacArthur Boulevard to bless local Laurel District businesses from 12:00pm-2:00pm. Lead by Sifu "Master" Lacy, the Buk Sing Kung Fu Academy of Fremont will mesmerize the crowd by unleashing two amazing lions accompanied by drummers, firecrackers and offerings to bring luck and welcome the Year of the Rooster. Plan your weekend so you won’t miss the welcoming of the New Year with the Laurel community.
