The San Francisco duo, Late Aster, will follow their 2021 debut EP True and Toxic with a new EP, Light Rail Session, September 29 via Slow and Steady Records/Bright Shiny Things, announcing this week with first single + video "Ripple". They will celebrate Light Rail Session with a performance at the Bandcamp Store in Oakland, release night.
Four previously unreleased tracks recorded live in one day, June 9, at Light Rail Studios, the Light Rail Session features 3 originals along with a radical take on the jazz standard, "It Never Entered My Mind". The EP offers an intimate listening of live performances and experimentation of colors and textures within the limits of two brass instruments, fx pedals, a drum machine/sampler, a Korg minilogue synthesizer, and a Moog subharmonicon.
Late Aster was formed when Aaron Messing and Anni Hochhalter, two classically trained brass musicians. Joined in the studio by their guitarist Charles Mueller, who co-produced and co-engineered with Mark Yoshizumi, who also handled the mastering. The live tracks are situated somewhere between jazztronica, ambient electronic, and chamber pop. In these live performances Late Aster are essentially two electronic DJs, with training in classical and jazz music, experimenting with brass instruments and effects pedals.
Each track will be accompanied by video footage of the session filmed on hi-8 tape from a handheld video recorder by SF-based artist/photographer Deadeye Press.
