Introduction by João Moreira Salles
Brazilian documentary filmmaker João Moreira Salles was executive producer of many of Coutinho’s films and completed his final, unfinished work, Last Conversations.
Shortly before his death in February 2014, Coutinho was engaged in conversations with Brazilian students about their lives and dreams. The camera also captured some of Coutinho’s own thoughts and doubts about his practice of filmmaking, which his longtime collaborators, Jordana Berg and João Moreira Salles, included as another “conversation” when they completed the film. For Brazilian curator Amir Labaki “Last Conversations did not initially bear the marks of a farewell film. However, in actually being one, it’s a beautiful closure to one of the most original [bodies of work] in the history of world documentary and Brazilian cinema.”
Part of the 'Eduardo Coutinho: A Cinema of Listening' series at the BAMPFA.
