After Larry Vuckovich's performances and experiences with some of the greatest Latin percussionists in the world, Jose Mangual (formerly with Charlie Parker and Erroll Garner), Frankie Malabe, Pete Escovedo, Louis Romero, John Santos and Hector Lugo, Larry formed his Latin band, La Orquesta El Vucko, that included Louis Romero and Hector Lugo. Yoshi's Wednesday, May 8th concert, will include swinging Bebop, Brazilian, World Music, besides the hard-hitting Afro-Cuban jazz, plus funky boogaloo blues rhythms. Both Jackie Ryan and percussionist Hector Lugo, who also has a beautiful voice, will sing some famous boleros, cha-cha's + more. The rest of the band includes a powerful rhythm section with Larry on piano, Buca Necak, bass and Jeff Minnieweather on drums. This is a program not to be missed!

A vital link to a golden era of jazz in San Francisco, pianist Larry Vuckovich has been tending the bebop torch since the mid-1950s. He performs an evening of Great American Songbook standards, delivered with a twist by his excellent International Trio.
As the only protégé of North Beach piano legend Vince Guaraldi, the Yugoslav-born Vuckovich has cultivated an encompassing and supremely cosmopolitan sensibility. He's a scintillating stylist who is fluent in a multitude of modern jazz dialects, each with its own particular rhythmic and harmonic inflections. For many years he was known as a stimulating accompanist for some of the music's greatest singers (Jon Hendricks, Mel Tormé, and Bobby McFerrin), but he's also a pioneer of Balkan jazz who paved the way for the contemporary scene's fascination with the intricate meters and raucous energy of Eastern European folk forms. A supple purveyor of Latin jazz, Vuckovich can dig into buoyant Afro-Cuban grooves, or wax moody and melancholic with noir-tinged ballads. His International Trio with bassist Ken Okada and drum maestro Akira Tana covers a lot of this ground, while adding Japanese modes into the Middle Eastern and Balkan mix.
