Lacey Bryant: The Slow Tarot

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Modern Eden Gallery (see times)
Modern Eden Gallery proudly presents the public viewing of The Slow Tarot a personal art project by gallery artist Lacey Bryant. Over the last six years, the artist has been quietly working on a series of seventy-eight original oil paintings, one for each card in the standard tarot deck. We are incredibly excited to present the series in its entirety this April, and with the help of project backers on Kickstarter will be co-publishing with Lacey, a beautifully designed deck of tarot cards featuring the work. The tarot deck project was released on March 11, 2019 through Kickstarter and received over 600% of its funding in less than a week. Maintaining this exciting momentum, all artwork from the deck will be available to view and purchase exclusively at the gallery throughout the exhibition.

Lacey Bryant is represented by the gallery and we have worked together on numerous shows and projects over her career. This particular series, which began in 2012, shortly after her first solo exhibition at the gallery, has grown in scope and ambition in the ensuing years. During the long time these paintings were being produced, the artist created works for 4 major solo exhibitions and more than 15 group exhibitions at Modern Eden, along residencies in 2016 and 2017 at Chalk Hill. Throughout, she always found time to return to the tarot. There are reflections of her life and her community in every piece, and while the process has been slow, it has been full of intention.

Lacey lives in the SF bay area where she paints almost every day. Her expressive oil paintings capture haunting narratives between her subjects. Characters inhabit a realm of strange, nostalgic sweetness with undercurrents of darkness and mystery.

Lacey Bryant will be in attendance at the opening reception. ‘The Slow Tarot’ decks will be available for purchase in person at the opening. The exhibition is free and open to the public and complimentary refreshments will be served. Please join us!

For press inquiries or sales, please contact Gallery Director Kim Larson [email protected].

The exhibition will be on display through May 4, 2019 and is free and open to the public.

Modern Eden Gallery is located at 801 Greenwich St. in San Francisco’s historic North Beach neighborhood.
