The Spark: After Puccini became enamored with the unadorned realism of the play La Tosca in 1889, he had to wrest the rights for the story from none other than Giuseppe Verdi.

The Story: The love between Floria Tosca, a singer, and Mario Cavaradossi, a painter, fills the sinister Baron Scarpia, the Chief of Police, with jealousy. Cavaradossi is hiding a political fugitive and Scarpia abuses his power to force Tosca to betray her lover's secret. Tosca has her revenge on Scarpia, but realizes too late that her plan to save Cavaradossi is doomed.

The Stage: This opera takes place over the course of just one day: June 17, 1800. Through stunningly realistic and luxurious settings, the tragic world of Tosca is vividly illustrated in this Thierry Bosquet recreation of the original 1932 sets that inaugurated the War Memorial Opera House.

The Score: Puccini was so obsessed by the realism of this opera that legend has it that he asked the Vatican for the exact pitch of the bell of Saint Peter's, incorporated the melody of the Roman church's Te Deum and even traveled to Rome to hear the bells near the Castel Sant' Angelo.
