Composed by Antonio Sartorio and Marc'Antonio Ziani, 'La Flora' premiered in Venice in 1681 to great fanfare but was never seen again. This fall, audiences will have the public's first chance to witness this rare gem since it was originally staged.

Set during the late Roman Republic, and centering on the character of Flora, the love interest of the military hero Pompey the Great, 'La Flora' is a work of emotional chiaroscuro that ranges from tragedy to farce. The story explores the complications that ensue when Pompey is arranged to marry the emperor's daughter, who is herself already married to another. Flora fights to keep Pompey to herself, but Pompey proves to be captive more to power than to love.

With a libretto by Novello Bonis, the opera was originally a commission for Sartorio, who died halfway through the process of composition. It was completed by Ziani, who was held in high esteem as a master of counterpoint and form, as well as a sensitive setter of texts.

The cast includes soprano Alexa Andersen in the role of Flora; contralto Jasmine Johnson in the role of Pompeo (Pompey); bass Wayne Wong as the emperor Silla (Sulla); soprano Aura Veruni as Emilia; contralto Sara Couden as Servio; soprano Nina Jones as Geminio; and tenor Sidney Ragland as Strabone.

Ricci directs, and prize-winning harpsichordist Matthew Dirst conducts Ars Minerva's period instrument orchestra including Cynthia Keiko Black and Gail Hernandez Rosa on violin; Gretchen Claassen, cello; Daria D'Andrea, viola; Richard Savino, theorbo; and Dominic Favia, trumpet.

Since 2013, Ars Minerva has presented modern world premieres of eight Baroque operas: La Cleopatra composed by Daniele da Castrovillari; The Amazons in the Fortunate Isles by Carlo Pallavicino; La Circe by Pietro Andrea Ziani; Ifigenia in Aulide by Giovanni Porta; Ermelinda by Domenico Freschi; Messalina by Pallavicino; Astianatte by Leonardo Vinci; and Olimpia Vendicata by Domenico Freschi.

$25 - $125.
