Blending Caribbean beats, reggaeton, and hip hop styles, San Francisco-born Cecilia Cassandra Pena-Govea (known professionally as La Dona) makes her first solo appearance on Brava's main stage! The Mexican-American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist grew up performing professionally as a trumpeter in her parent's conjunto, eventually mastering instruments such as the guitarron, vihuela, guitar, and Latin percussion. Composing songs that explore brown femininity, her music is inspired by love, sex, pain, and climate catastrophes, and has received early praise from the likes of The Fader, Billboard, NPR, People CHICA and Remezcla.
La Dona's main stage appearance comes on the heels of her performance at the famed SXSW Musical Festival in March and in advance of opening for Durand Jones' "Cruisin' to the Park" tour in May.
La Dona will be joined on stage by special guests Camilo Landau, Daniel Riera, Fernington, and Jada Imani. With Bay Area's DJ Mr. Lucky spinning pre-and-post show from Brava's lobby.
$30 orchestra; $20 mezzanine.
Presented by Brava Theater Center
