Celebrating their 22nd year and the release of their third album "Cast Away Our Sorrows," Kugelplex continues the ecstatic traditions of the old-world klezmers through music that dismantles cultural boundaries. The ensemble inspires and uplifts audiences through a repertoire drawing from centuries of musical traditions spanning Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Kugelplex has performed with Joan Baez, Frank London, Kitka, Oakland Symphony, SF Symphony and many others.
Musicians: Dan Cantrell, accordion; Lila Sklar, violin/vocals; Jason Ditzian, clarinet; Max Baloian, guitars; Eric Perney, bass; Michael Pinkham, percussion. With special guests: Faisal Zedan, Arabic percussion; Morgan Nilsen, Sax; Benji Rifati, Trumpet; Elizabeth Strong, dance; Sean Tergis, percussion.
NYC-based Chaia (Kaia Berman Peters) is a DJ, accordionist, and vocalist. Raised in the klezmer tradition and mentored by Jewish music pioneers Basya Schechter and Hankus Netsky, she makes electronic music that bridges klezmer with techno and house music. Using samples from traditional klezmer tracks, Jewish liturgical music, and her own field recordings, she weaves the two traditions to create something rooted and yet new. In 2022, Chaia founded Kleztronica Rave, a celebration of queer Jewish electronic music. Chaia is joined by Liam Pachler, bassist, guitarist, and producer hailing from Los Angeles, CA.
"Chaia is forging a new movement in klezmer and really taking it to the 21st century." -The Forward
Kugelplex's new record, "Cast Away Our Sorrows" is rooted in the Jewish diasporic experience, spanning ecstatic chassidic melodies, gossamer shtetl memories, sexy sephardic grooves, Radiohead, Eric Satie, Leonard Cohen and myriad other influences picked up along the course of the lives of these six itinerant musicians.
Advance Tickets: $25.00; Tickets at the Door: $30.00.
