Kristie Hansen "Symbiosis"

Kristie Hansen is a conceptual artist working primarily in sculpture. Concerned with the disposable nature of today’s society, she reflects on the fragility of nature and our human connection to its strength, power, and energy. Unwanted commodities are manipulated and joined with elements from the natural world transforming them into evocative works that raise questions about the environment, consumerism, community, beauty, and the world around us.

For her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Hansen presents new and recent works. Symbiosis reveals her inquiries into the complicated relationships we hold with nature, especially in rapidly changing environments. In earlier works she took inspiration from years of shopping for second-hand fashion, and transformed vintage clothing into assemblage objects. When a felled tree near her studio was left for trash, she took the same interest in this discarded object. The result has been a new commitment to honoring the power of nature and the need to take care of all our resources. She lives and works in San Francisco.
