“Kommunity Kultura” is a traditional Philippine music, movement and cultural education program taking place at San Francisco’s International Hotel Manilatown Center once a month on third Saturday afternoons at 2pm. This program emphasizes hands-on instruction on the pre-colonial Philippine cultural traditions. It is a FREE family-friendly program that is accessible to all ages and levels of ability.
This month we will be focusing on the Tiruray Mag askik Social Dance and the Kelo Agung musical accompaniment for this dance.
?2pm: Tiruray Kelo Agung Music Workshop with Manuel Dragon, Conrad Benedicto and the I-Hotel’s house kulintang ensemble Kultura Kapwa3pm: Beginning Tiruray Mag asik Dance with Kultura Kapwa’s Caroline Cabading
The  Tiruray, who share a common legendary ancestry with the Maguindanao, live in the district of Dinaig, south of the Cotabato River in southwestern Mindanao. They are divided into coastal, river and mountain groups. Coastal or lowland Tirurays have close contact with the Maguindanao population and many of them have adopted them neighbors’ culture. However, Tirurays who live in the mountains have remained to live in the traditional way.
