Knot Tying & Landscape Drawing Workshop

SEE EVENT DETAILS
In this virtual Zoom workshop, artist and educator Hannah Perrine Mode will share the fascinating mechanics of rope teams for glacier travel and teach participants uses and techniques for tying a few very important knots: double fisherman's, alpine butterfly, and figure eight. Participants will then spend time practicing blind contour drawings based on the natural environments that they feel connected to. This type of drawing is a slow practice for close looking, and is meant to be low-stress, imprecise, and fun. All ages and experience levels welcome!

As an artist working with climate science, Hannah has spent many a summer navigating alpine glaciers and the coastal channels of Southeast Alaska. She has learned to tie knots in order to safely move through these environments, whether traversing glacier ice or hitching a boat to the dock. For Perrine Mode, knots are a reminder of the way her body is connected to the surrounding land and its geologic forces, as well as the people she is (literally and figuratively) connected to.

Hannah Perrine Mode is featured in Bedford Gallery's current exhibition A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard.
