The ukulele is misunderstood-at least that's the opinion of Katelyn Sullivan, the sole member of SF ukulele/looping pedal project Kitten Grenade. She doesn't see the ukulele as a novelty instrument. Sure, the tiny jangling strings may produce a whimsical, kinda beachy sound, but Sullivan contrasts it with some serious songs about heartbreak. The soul-searching lyrics, combined with dreamy, '40s jazz-inspired melodies, make for bittersweet music. Using her looping pedal she's able to play solo, building an orchestra of ukulele sounds and vocals right on stage. The results are lush-and impressive to watch. (Aaron Carnes)
