For centuries women have gathered together in domestic spaces to seek community and to problem solve. To have a talk at the kitchen table means engaging in trusted, frank conversation among friends and family—among those one can trust and count on to provide positive feedback. This participatory conceptual feminist performance creates a temporarily platform for public inquiry and debate regarding the future of women’s roles in uncertain times.
In this audience participatory experience, Tanya Augsburg plays the role of moderator, “rolestorming†Barbara Walters. She invites participants to choose an “identity.†As that “identity,†she asks participants to identify a current political concern for women, follow a series of instructions, and answer questions that culminate in a face-to face kitchen table talk or a real outside “action.â€
Tanya is an interdisciplinary feminist performance scholar, critic, and curator. She is also Associate Professor of Humanities and Liberal Studies at San Francisco State University and NCWCA’s Art Historian in Residence.
