Terence Blanchard's UpSwing series starts with a double bill of inspired instrumentalists.
With one foot firmly planted in jazz and the other in hip-hop and R&B, trumpeter Keyon Harrold has thrived by effortlessly navigating the kindred musical currents. Hailed as "the future of the trumpet" by Wynton Marsalis and mentored by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, Harrold has established himself as an improviser, vocalist, songwriter, producer, and studio ace via his work on recordings by Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Gregory Porter, and Maxwell. Robert Glasper recruited him to supply the trumpet work in Don Cheadle's Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, and his latest album and Concord Jazz debut Foreverland, was released in February.
Alto saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins is one of the vital voices of jazz in the 21st century. A native of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Wilkins moved to New York in 2015 for studies at the Juilliard School, and since then, he has worked with a range of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Joel Ross, Solange, and Gerald Clayton. His Blue Note debut Omega took the #1 spot on The New York Times' list of Best Jazz Albums of 2020, and his new album, Blues Blood, will be released in October featuring the band he brings for this date including pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Rick Rosato, drummer Kweku Sumbry, and a trio of vocalists.
