Keb' Mo'

at Mountain Winery (6:45pm)
Keb' Mo': Hope Services Benefit Concert
plus Mindi Abair

An iconic artist who helped re-introduce electric blues into the pop music mainstream, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and four-time GRAMMY winner Keb' Mo' gained worldwide fame by embracing the country-blues style of Robert Johnson and combining it with modern blues, R&B, and soul. The Los Angeles native absorbed the gospel and soul music he was exposed to in his youth, finding early work in his 20s as guitarist and arranger with blues-rock violin legend Papa John Creach and paying his dues on the L.A. club scene.

Born Kevin Moore, the guitarist released his eponymous Okeh Records debut under his adopted name in 1994, featuring an inspired collection of songs that established his uniquely hybridized approach, setting the stage for his 1996 sophomore release Just Like You -- a commercial and critical breakthrough session that earned Keb' Mo' his first GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

He's collaborated with a staggering list of greats including Bonnie Raitt, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Jackson Browne, Natalie Cole, Lyle Lovett, India.Arie, James Cotton, and Bobby Rush, while recording fourteen sweetly soulful records as a leader, racking up three more GRAMMYs and eleven nominations, including a win for his heartfelt 2017 collaboration with blues legend Taj Mahal, TajMo. His latest Concord Records release, 2019's Oklahoma, includes appearances by pedal steel virtuoso Robert Randolph and former SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Rosanne Cash.

Internationally famous trad Delta blues revivalist Keb' Mo 'was born Kevin Moore in South Central--the handle is a phonetic version of the way his name sounds south of the Santa Monica Freeway. Mo got his start with the band Zulu, accompanying Papa John Creech, best know to white boys as the gentleman fiddler who put a little grease into the bearings of the Jefferson Wheelchair. Keb' Mo' is devoted to the works of the mysterious guitarist Robert Johnson, and even played Johnson in a movie once, and he was a major consultant on the recent PBS documentary series on the blues. At this Stanford Jazz Festival event, he'll provide vocals and guitar at Ruth Davies' annual Blues Night. Davies will back him up on bass, with Bennett Paster on piano, Charles McNeal on sax and Ndugu Chancler on drums. - Richard von Busack
