The term 'windfall' originated in the 15th century to describe fruit that the wind blew down, making it easily accessible for anyone to take. Its additional meaning, then, is an unexpected, unearned, or sudden gain, blessing, or advantage.
Kathy Kallick has won a Grammy, two IBMA Awards, and a California Bluegrass Association Lifetime Membership award; she co-founded the influential and groundbreaking band, Good Ol' Persons, and has led her own highly-acclaimed band for the past 30 years. They've performed at The Freight numerous times, as well as touring throughout North America and Europe, and their seven albums have each spent a year in the top echelon of the national bluegrass charts.
This concert celebrates the release of her 24th album -- and it's not only her familiar and appealing blend of bluegrass and original songs.
Kathy explains: "When my mom was particularly proud of one of us, she'd get tall and say, 'Well, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.' I've quoted her many times, but never wanted to take much credit for the fabulous things my kids have done. I mostly tried to stay out of their way.
When I recorded the second tribute to Mom, I had the idea to invite both kids to join me on a song I sang with my mother many times. I knew Juniper would jump in, as she was already leading her own band, although The Gold Souls play funk/R&B/dance music. Still, she had lots of experience singing and recording, and, as expected, did a wonderful job channeling her country music roots. The big surprise was Riley -- who absolutely nailed it with their wonderful singing!
Then we performed the song with the Kathy Kallick Band at the California Bluegrass Association's festival in Grass Valley, and it was so much fun that Riley said immediately, 'Let's make a country album!' What a sweet surprise for me, what a gift, and what a bonus after fifty years playing music. A true windfall!"
Kathy Kallick & The Windfalls combine classic country, blues/r&b, rockabilly, folk, rock, and, yes, a bit of bluegrass -- including Kathy Kallick originals -- in a presentation that is appreciated by both listeners and dancers. The singing is sensational, but so too is the band. Kathy, Juniper Waller, and Riley Thompson are accompanied on record and in concert by the Kathy Kallick Band: Annie Staninec (fiddle), Greg Booth (pedal steel, dobro), Cary Black (electric bass), Tom Bekeny (mandolin), and, of course, Kathy and her acoustic guitar. The band is augmented by electric guitarist Mitch Polzak and drummer Billy D. Thompson, and features all three singers on lead and harmony vocals.
