'Kallisti' by David Morritt: Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present 'Kallisti' by San Francisco artist David Morritt. David’s new series of mixed media skull sculptures are handmade from clay, wood, tesserae, wire, paint, glitter, glaze, rope, and light. The sculptures represent balance through a coupling of opposite principles: masculine and feminine, nature and nurture, life and death, light and dark, growth and decay, celebration and mourning, past and future. Each sculpture has its own personality and is a meditation on life's condition. As the series developed from deer skulls to unicorns so did its meaning:

"Unicorns are symbolic of magic and fantasy, but for me, they're more about an individual's search," said Morritt. "And in that search, anything can happen. It's more about a oneness, and how everything's connected. If the deer skulls are about duality, then the unicorns are about singularity."

David is inspired by the environment, relationships, colors, music, art, culture, and the everyday rhythm of life. He spent the first half of his life in Los Angeles and the second half in San Francisco. He has a BA in the History of Art from UC Berkeley, an MFA in Painting from SJSU, and an Art Teaching Credential from SFSU. Join us on Friday, May 19th from 6-8pm for the opening reception of this exhibition. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance.

Four Barrel is a cafe and roastery that has been supporting artists with exhibitions since 2008. This exhibition is free and open to the public. Four Barrel Coffee is located at 375 Valencia Street in San Francisco, and is open daily from 7am until 8pm. Four Barrel may be reached at [email protected].
