Not only was Kafana Balkan the first ongoing Balkan dance party in San Francisco, it's also the Bay Area's biggest Balkan music party masterminded by DJ Željko Petkovi?. Željko hails from the Balkans, Serbia by way of Frankfurt and now resides in San Francisco. We here in San Francisco have the great benefit of enjoying his discriminating taste and seemingly endless collection of Balkan music. DJ Željko clearly loves what he does and he is a crowd pleaser, concocting a genuine brew of highly danceable Balkan Brass.KB event has won "The Best of" both Bay Guardian and SF Weekly weekly newspapers.
ISTANBUL CONNECTION
A Bay Area musical collective formed when thirteen members of the hottest Balkan and Latin bands were gravitationally pulled to visit the city of Istanbul. With a mind towards cross-cultural connection and sonic expansion, these die-hards flew 7,000 miles to represent a piece of the the Bay Area music scene. In the process, they have cemented themselves as a supergroup of groove and since their epic beginnings, the band has performed sold-out-show after sold-out-show. They continue to draw their inspiration from the Turkish Maqam, Flamenco, Rumba, Balkan, and Cumbia they are are so deeply rooted in. Come prepared to dance!

takes you on a musical joy ride through Eastern Europe, showcasing Romani, Bulgarian, Serbian, Greek and Macedonian traditions as well as Balkan-inspired originals.
DJ Željko
About the presenters: Kafana Balkan was the first ongoing Balkan dance party in San Francisco and is the only one of its kind organized by DJ Željko Petkovi? in the Bay Area. Željko hails from Serbia by way of Frankfurt, and, lucky for us, he now calls San Francisco home. DJ Željko has discriminating taste, a seemingly endless collection of great Balkan albums, and love and joy for his music, a crowd-pleasing, danceable Balkan brass sound. Željko promotes Balkan music and culture by producing Kafana Balkan roughly four times a year. Since February 2015, he's joined by Marco Peris Coppola, Creative Co Strategist and Co Booker, who is helping Kafana Balkan grow.
JILL PARKER is an international, award winning belly dancer. She is an instructor, choreographer, and founder of the modern tribal fusion belly dance movement.
She's an exceptional belly dance teacher with a gift for demystifying this sensuous form, making its techniques accessible to new dancers, while offering tremendous insight for refinement to advanced dancers. With over two decades of experience, she has trained many of the top dancers in the genre.
Jill is an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance, founder of Ultra Gypsy, and director of the Foxglove Sweethearts. She teaches weekly classes at ODC Commons (SF) and Spring Fall Dance Studio (Berkeley).?
ELIZABETH STRONG is a life long dancer, raised in the folk communities of California, where she was exposed to music and dance of the Balkans and Middle East from a young age. In addition to over a decade of study in the Bay Area, She has traveled and studied dance ethnology in Turkey and Egypt, the first student of Reyhan Tuzsuz in Istanbul, and student of Sahra Saeeda in Egyptian dance and culture.
LISA HYDE is emotional elegant and dynamic vision wrapped in a hip scarf. A cruel mistress behind the bar, she can use her shimmy to thrill an audience or shake up the perfect whiskey sour.
SHANTI BARDOT is a Bay Are bellydancer with Arabic Folkdance
tendencies. Her dancing is bold sultry and heavily influenced by Greek Mythology.Shanti is currently the director of Qabila Folkdance Company BA and co-directs Arcana Music & Dance.
MIMS RAFIQ BRADEN is a dance and music lover. Born in Pakistan, she relocated to the Bay Area at an early age and studied ballet and jazz. She rediscovered dance as an adult when her love of Middle Eastern music led her to Jill Parker's belly dance class in 2004. She studies with Elizabeth Strong whenever possible and is a member of the Arabic Folkdance company Qabila, directed by Shanti Bardot. Mirriam is in love with the Bay Area cultural dance community, has a degree in International Public Health, and loves learning and teaching through dance.
