Kaboom! Stories of Unusual Heroes Told by Putignano's Graphic Novels

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Not all superheroes wear capes. From the story of the terrible events that unfolded in the Pian d'Albero massacre, all the way to Shackleton's journey, flipping through the weekly strips that bring smiles to our faces and relate to everyday life, artist and designer Pierpaolo Putignano uses comics to tell stories of ordinary people, with their acts of courage, fear and their human contradictions.
In his exhibition Kaboom!, Putignano introduces his world made up of mocking birds, indomitable explorers, unfortunate partisans and soldiers who have turned their backs on hate. Beginning with the story of a massacre by the Nazis, who in June 1944 led the killing of 39 people, both partisans belonging to the Sinigaglia Brigade (which goes on to free Florence and hold it fast until the allies' arrival), and defenseless civilians. Among them, fifteen-year old Aronne Cavicchi and most of his family, guilty only of providing a refuge, for one night, to a few boys in their twenties, whose only desire was to free their land.
The exhibition continues with original production of Putignano's other works, all linked by a single common thread: the telling of stories that read in between the lines, beyond what the text alone conveys. The tales of heroes without capes, individuals who rise to meet the challenges at hand when the fate puts them to test, as in Shackleton's arduous journey, or the unwavering yet diplomatic opposition with which Pier Capponi faces Charles VIII's arrogance in Florence in the year 1494. All this told in a way only authors and independent publishers can when free of constraints and rife with creativity. Not in a didactic or notional way, but rather using fiction, what if and other narrative expedients in a storytelling that respects the real events, drawing the curious and history lovers to comics and vice versa.
Kaboom! ends with a sample of the weekly strips of Cyrano, a small toucan who, between jokes, deals with ecological themes as well as social network and technology addictions, and with a preview of a project in the works--which is therefore currently concealed by a veil of secrecy. Temporarily entitled Diary of a Peaceful War, it narrates a true story yet again, telling of an ordinary man who decides not to take part in the madness that rages through the world during the Second World War.
Passionate about comics from an early age, Pierpaolo Putignano began to be published in 1986 in several local newspapers, until landing small, but important, publishing realities. He has taken on a variety of roles in the sector, including those of graphic designer / letter writer for DC Comics and Marvel Italia, animator for RAI, and has worked on advertising campaigns. Since 1997 he has collaborated with Lucca Comics & Games, one of the most important events in the industry.
