Kegan Marling presents Jump Ship Mid Way

October 10-19, 2014
CounterPULSE - 1310 Mission Street, San Francisco
keganmarling.org - counterpulse.org

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—July 23, 2014—Kegan Marling returns to CounterPULSE for Jump Ship Mid Way, the culmination of a four-year performance project that slips into an intimate and indulgent world of two gay boys drunk on whiskey, surrounded by sparkles, and pleading for Freddie Mercury to carry them off as they huddle together against the rolling sunrise.

Influenced by cabaret-style theater and 1980’s bear-bar culture, Jump Ship Mid Way features performances by Mica Sigourney (Club SOME THING) and Kegan Marling (Sideshow Physical Theatre) with lighting design by Jerry Lee Abram and sound design by Mark O’Brian.

Over the past five years the United States has seen significant progress towards inclusion of gays in traditional roles of responsibility—marriage, parenthood, and military service. It reflects a continuing shift away from the playfulness of the 1970’s, which was escalated by the onset of the AIDS epidemic. This defamation of play can be epitomized in this statement by author and ex-gay minister David Kyle Foster: “I saw the narcissism and arrested emotional development all around me, and in me. Guys flitting around like Peter Pan were sometimes cute and funny, and certainly nonthreatening, but I wanted to be a grown up. I wanted to be a man. I wanted to be strong, solid, stable and reliable.” Marling & Sigourney playfully explore some of the impact of this image struggle for the gay community.

“I’ve never fit in with what I believed was THE gay community, a culture that seemed marked by an easiness with sex I didn’t possess. I felt tension between the family-oriented, grown-up part of me and this coy inner-child navigating an overtly sexual community. As I’ve begun exploring multiple queer communities and identities, it seemed important to understand what originally led me to think of the gay community as a singular identity, and why I felt so isolated because of my difficulty engaging with play.”—Kegan Marling

Concurrent with the show is an exhibit of photographs and drawings exploring the nostalgia towards sexual playfulness and deviancy prior to the AIDS epidemic.

Jump Ship Mid Way was originally conceived during a residency at CounterPULSE in 2010. These performances are supported by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Triangle Lab's Artist-Investigator Project, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, CA$H Grant, Dancers' Group's Lighting Artists in Dance Award and the New Stages for Dance Award, administered by Dance/USA in partnership with Dancers’ Group and supported by MetLife Foundation.
