This collaborative of Jazz instrumentalists, composers, arrangers, soul vocalists, and Hip-Hop artists collectively known as Jazz Mafia has been a creative force in the Bay Area music scene for almost 15 years and is fast emerging as the West Coast’s most prolific musical organization. Led by multi-instrumentalist Adam Theis, the 40 piece Hip-Orchestra Jazz Mafia has toured nationally, bringing a led to some of the largest Jazz Festivals of North America. At the same time, the collective has backed up some of the most respected names in the business—Lyrics Born, Ledesi, Blackalicious,Thomas Dolby, Santana, Big Freedia, Chali2na, Martin Luther, DJ Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, Kid Koala, KRS One, Booker T, Eric Lindell, and The New Master Sounds. This is also a working musician’s organization with members contributing horns and strings on over a hundred recordings.
Jazz Mafia has also won fans for its various annual birthday tributes to Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Miles Davis and Prince, those masters of music who composed the soundtrack of the American experience.
The 2014 Prince Tribute will include an all-star 10 piece band, featuring vocal quartet virtuosos Trance Thompson, Nataly Michelle Wright and Tim Brown (TNT). Recently these four blew the Independent’s doors off the hinges at the Undercover SF: STAND! Tribute to Sly Stone. Music-lovers can look forward to enjoying trademark Jazz Mafia-style, live re-envisioned, remakes of Prince classics, but we wouldn’t be Jazz Mafia if we didn’t dust some off rare cuts and B sides, too.
