SEE EVENT DETAILS
Swinging, unadulterated, classic jazz standards and blues at its best played by Hammond jazz organist Midori Ono along with the legendary guitarist Calvin Keys, saxophonist Lyle Link, and drummer Akira Tana.

Born and raised in Japan, Midori Ono started playing various keyboards at a very young age. She progressed to the Hammond organ when just eleven years old. After graduating from Doshisha University, she started performing on the organ in Japan and played with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, and others when they came to town. Making a name for herself, Ono began performing in the US at the jazz festivals. She released her first album Green’s Blues in 1999, and in 2014, released In My Own Way with Akira Tana. Ono currently lives in Nara prefecture, Japan, and performs in Jazz Organ Live concerts for children all over Japan.

Saxophonist and flautist Lyle Link is based in Washington, DC. A versatile musician and sought-after sideman, he performs in many musical styles, from jazz, blues and R&B to latin and world beat. He has played with artists Patti Austin, Christian McBride, Larry Willis, George Duke, Curtis Lundy and Ralph Peterson, to name a few. He has also performed with pop icons Patti Labelle, James Ingram, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, and jammed with Prince. In addition to working as a first call sideman, he also leads his group, the Lyle Link Quartet. As a music educator, Lyle teaches at Sheridan School and the Levine School of Music.

For nearly fifty years, jazz guitarist Calvin Keys has been a leader of his own bands, producer of his recordings and on first call for his exceptional style as an accompanist and soloist by many other legends of jazz. He has played with the giants of the organ like Frank Edwards, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy MC Griff, Jack McDuff, Trudy Pitts, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Papa De Francesco, and Charles Earland. He played with Ahmad Jamal for nearly 20 years, and worked as music director with yet another giant, Earl “Fatha” Hines. Through the years Calvin Keys has graced the stage with Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, Carmen McCrea, Gloria Lynn, Jackie Ivory, Jackie Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Eddie Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, George Coleman, Jimmy Witherspoon, Hadley Caliman to name a few.

A self-taught drummer/percussionist, Akira Tana started playing semi-professionally while still in college. Born and raised in California, he headed East to earn degrees from Harvard and the New England Conservatory of Music. Since then, Tana has worked with Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, Jim Hall, Art Farmer, and other notables and has appeared on over 150 recordings. With bassist Rufus Reid he formed the band TanaReid and also the Asian American Jazz Trio. He has four recordings as a leader on Sons of Sound recordings: Secret Agent Men, Moon Over the World, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and most recently Otonowa, which features jazz interpretations of Japanese folk and pop melodies that date back decades and even centuries.
