SEE EVENT DETAILS
A Wonderful afternoon! Join us at the world-famous Golden Gate Yacht Club, home of the World's Cup in 2010. Enjoy a fabulous view and a drink from our no-host bar and leave your cares behind ...
Mention Margie Baker to any Jazz or R&B aficionado - the response will be a huge smile. What a story!
Born dirt-poor in a country shack in East Texas, Margie went on to get her Doctorate Degree in Education. For three decades she held down two jobs - San Francisco school district administrator and professional singer - while raising a family.
As a young woman, she became acclimated to the jazz world by chaperoning her sister-in-law, Mary Stallings, on overseas tours. Stallings sang with Count Basie.
She was mentored by jazz trumpet legend, Dizzy Gillespie, who often had Margie join him onstage whether it was in New York City (at the Village Gate), San Francisco (at the Great American Music Hall), Oakland (at Yoshi's), or in Tokyo. When Dizzy wanted to work with a vocalist, his top choices were Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughn, and Margie Baker.
Margie performed at Hilton Hotels for 20 years. One night at the prestigious Henri's Room at the top of the San Francisco Hilton, her friend, guitarist George Hanepin, coaxed her out of the audience to sing one song. She immediately received a job offer from Conrad and Barron Hilton who were there that night. During the school year, she sang two nights a week, and full time in the summers in hotels around the world for 20 years. She also performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival for 7 years, and summer jazz festivals in Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Japan and France. She was named "Entertainer of the Year" and "Outstanding Jazz/Vocalist" from the San Francisco Council of Entertainment.
Noah Griffin also held two jobs for 35 years in media, politics and public relations in addition to his singing career.
If Noah appears at ease and totally comfortable in front of an audience, it is probably because his first appearance was at age 7 with the San Francisco Boy's Chorus singing a solo in La Boheme at the San Francisco Opera. He has since shared the stage with Duke Ellington, the Shirelles, Paul Robeson, Leontyne Price and Nat King Cole.
Noah founded The Cole Porter Society in 2014 to raise the level of music literacy of young people through the Great American Songbook and the genius of Cole Porter. He has produced and performed in sold-out performances at the Herbst Theatre, Showcase Theater at the Marin Center, Golden Gate Yacht Club, 142 Throckmorton, and the Barn Theater in Ross, and has brought the magic of Cole Porter and the Great American Songbook into private homes throughout the country.
