Jazz at Lincoln Center founder/ director Wynton Marsalis conceived his composition Spaces as an “animal ballet,” played by his own Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and starring two extraordinary dancers: Lil Buck, creator of a novel dance vocabulary combining aspects of tap and ballet, and Jared Grimes, a Broadway dance maker and tapper, winner of the 2014 Astaire Award. Noted choreographer Damian Woetzel helped meld dance, music, and bestiary into a seamless, captivating show.
