Opening reception Feb 15, 5:30-8:30pm; Exhibition February 15th to February 28th 2018

Join us on February 15th to celebrate the opening reception of local artist Suzanne Cerny's Jazz Art exhibition at the International Art Museum of America. In this special exhibition, you will be able to enjoy some of her most prominent paintings.

Suzanne followed her instincts during her journey through her art life. She chose subjects that she wanted to envision, subjects that were new to her and therefore challenging. She graduated from the High School of Music and Art in New York City and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art for her college art training. In the late 1950's nonobjective abstraction and the lure of abstract expressionism was working its way into changing the face of drama in all art forms. In the visual arts, a return to basic design and realism confronted artists.

Staying steadfast in her desire to know more about life and how art was a given part of nature, she moved to the Yukon Territory in Canada to experience wilderness living. Being fresh out of school and not having achieved a standing in the New York scene, Suzanne was able to teach adult nightschool in Whitehorse and wanted to add what she had learned to what the Canadian artists were doing there, painting the landscape. Suzanne emerged as the winner of a 1967 City Hall Mural competition. Having completed that she moved to San Francisco, and painted constantly, learning classic techniques from books in the Public Library.

In 1995, the club owner Ridah Omri permitted Suzanne to draw during performances. As the walls of the small storefront were filled with her sketches and the atmosphere attracted a following in town. Later the larger pieces were added. Drawings and Paintings were signed nightly by the musicians.
Some pieces remain in Ridah Omri's collection and may be returned to the main collection, which is now being made public.
