Jamie Dubberly

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Blackbird Tavern -- CLOSED (see times)
“Jamie Dubberly is a trombonist, composer/arranger, and educator living in northern California. Since moving to the bay area, California in 2004, he has established a reputation as a top call trombonist in the local jazz, latin, and classical music scenes. A versatile performer and arranger both, Dubberly formed Orquesta Dharma in 2008 to record some original afro-cuban jazz material he had written for several friends and fellow musicians that were active as latin and jazz performers around the bay area. Three years later, the album “Road Warrior” emerged, as a result of a few studio sessions, and the band had already begun to develop a unique and highly distinctive sound. The music of “Road Warrior” is solidly in the tradition of such latin jazz legends as Poncho Sanchez, Cal Tjader, and Eddie Palmieri, but also looks forward, and represents a fresh approach in the original compositions and arrangements, and unique instrumentation. Critical praise for the album was immediate, from all over the globe, and the album went on to win Latin Jazz Corner’s “Next Generation Album of theYear” ( Dec 2011). The unique low horn section sound of trombone, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone, combined with a powerful and driving rhythm section of drums, three percussionists , bass and piano make for, in the words of Latin Beat magazine’s author Rudy Mangual: “a combination that is amazing, producing a distinctively refreshing and powerful sound…….” All About Jazz writer Dan Bilawsky also noted that “Dubberly’s broad ‘bone sound and arranging/composing skills, along with key contributions from his large cast of collaborators, help make Road Warrior a fun listen from start to finish” ( Jan 2012)”
