The San Francisco Choral Society concludes its historic 30th anniversary season with a liturgical telling of Christmas to the Feast of Epiphany as heard through J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248 (Cantatas IV, V and VI) and Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243. Led by Artistic Director Robert Geary, an array of guests will join the chorus for these historically informed performances including the Jubilate Orchestra on period instruments as well as sopranos Michele Kennedy and Jessica House Steward, mezzo-soprano Leandra Ramm, tenor Michael Jankosky and baritone Nikolas Nackley.
Bach's popular Christmas Oratorio was written in 1734 as one of three oratorios and consists of six cantatas, each intended to mark one of the major feast days of Christmas. In December 2018, the San Francisco Choral Society presented the first three cantatas and will conclude the masterwork with the final three. Often paired with the Christmas Oratorio, Bach's Magnificat in D Major was written for the Christmas Vespers in 1723 featuring texts that he later removed so that it could be performed throughout the year. These concerts mark the first time in a decade that the San Francisco Choral Society have performed these towering choral works. Michael Jankosky (tenor) and Nikolas Nackley (baritone) return as soloists following December 2018 appearances while Michele Kennedy (soprano), Jessica House Steward (soprano) and Leandra Ramm (mezzo-soprano) all make their San Francisco Choral Society debuts.
$35 to $50.
