Ivo Dimchev, the internationally celebrated performance artist and singer songwriter, makes his much-anticipated return to the Bay Area in a one-night-only solo concert at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, Wednesday, July 5 at 8 p.m. Top Faves, performed here in its West Coast premiere, is a collection of Dimchev's greatest hits from the last two decades.
Praised for his "extravagant exuberance" (The New Yorker) and his "persuasive subversive streak" (The New York Times), Dimchev has earned a reputation for his fearless provocations and unabashedly queer shows. "His fans compare him to Freddie Mercury, Kate Bush and Annie Lennox, but his closest parallel may be the English-born singer Anohni, formerly of the band Antony and the Johnsons. Dimchev's songs, like Anohni's, often tend toward drama and emotional intensity, rifling through the dark menagerie of the heart" (The New Yorker).
Over his career, Dimchev has received numerous honors and accolades including the prestigious Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Silver Lion Award for Innovation in Performance at the Venice Biennale.
In his sophomore appearance in the Bay Area, Dimchev will weave together songs and scenes from several of his past shows including Lili Handel (2004), Some Faves (2009), Selfie Concert (2018), P Project (2012), Facebook Theater (2016), and In Hell with Jesus (2022). Part musical revue, part performance art, Top Faves also involves audience participation. "I need to feel the audience is a co-creator of this experience with me - my partners in crime, if you will," said Dimchev. "The 'crime' we will commit is crossing borders while eliminating fear, prejudice and shame."
$15 - $34. 18+.
