In this short course you will learn the basic folding and sewing techniques that serve as the building blocks for all book binders. The class will teach you how to choose and handle materials, and how to use the tools of the trade. You'll get to choose from a variety of decorative papers and bookbinding thread to hand-craft your books. All materials will be provided and you will go home with your lovely crafted books!
Book artist and printmaker Megan Adie will be your expert instructor. This is a rare opportunity to learn book binding, in a relaxed setting, from a great teacher! Her career as a musician, specializing in historical performance practice, brought her to Switzerland and Denmark, where she lived until 2016. Most recently, Megan returned to San Francisco, where she currently is Full Time Faculty and Printmaking Studio Manager at the Academy of Art University. She publishes books and prints under the imprint Aviary Press, and has organized EDITION/Basel, a printmaking residency in Basel, Switzerland, since 2012.
