Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present 'Into The Light' by Hailey Gaiser. Based in San Francisco, painter and collage artist Hailey Gaiser brings attention to our commonalities while celebrating our differences with her series 'Into The Light'. She borrows symbols and styles from the ceremonial wear of ancient cultures all over the world, and integrates contemporary concepts such as technology and the quest for the Unknown. Her work is a response to the daily and relentless news cycle of local and global tragedy: “We are energy and energy is power, and yet it is so easy to feel powerless… Darkness cannot drive out darkness, so we must be the light.” Gasier incorporates fluorescent paints into her work and shines UV LED lights upon them to give the work the illusion of shining from within, as though the work is its own light source, just as she believes we must be.
Hailey Gaiser had an unconventional upbringing, raised by her “hippie-witch pagan mama,” along with whom she hop-scotched the wild places of this country. Art and an inquisitive nature were constants throughout this time of change and adjustment. For Gaiser, art making provided a lens through which to explore each new location. She took this lens to Seattle, WA, where she earned her BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in 2006. She then relocated to San Francisco, and the change of climate and atmosphere inspired a shift in her artwork: brightness and light replaced the dreary Seattle-winter inspired doom and gloom. Gaiser continues to travel the world and gather inspiration from new destinations, and from the indigenous stories and local histories she discovers.
