Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present “Intersections” by Annie Tull. Originally from Delaware, Annie Tull is an artist, designer, and fabricator based in Oakland, California. With degrees in fine art and architecture, her true passion lies at the intersection of the natural and built environments. Drawing from studies in light, form, rhythm, and composition, her suggestive and expressive oil paintings evoke fantastical landscapes that are then layered with a highly structured framework of lines achieved by the precise placement of cotton thread. The lush, ethereal background is corseted by the synthetic perfection of straight lines, creating a tension that mimics the relationship between the wild unknown of the human spirit and the rigid procession of human innovation.
“I use abstracted elements of landscape and architecture as metaphors for the human spirit and the human mind. Sometimes the two are at striking odds and pull us in vastly different directions. Sometimes, one may take the lead to contrast the other in complementary ways. Occasionally the two exist in a seamless harmony that satisfies the deepest part of the soul.”
This collection is a visual exploration of where those intersections lie, and what visceral effect each relationship can have upon the living, breathing soul of the viewer. Experiencing this work is like standing on the edge of a cliff, gazing out into the abyss, physically rooted in the present reality but crossing the ocean with your soul.
“Intersections” runs from June 15th through August 14th at The Mill in San Francisco. Join us on Friday June 15th from 6-8pm for the opening reception. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance.
