International Jazz Day

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Blackbird Tavern -- CLOSED (see times)
Celebrate International Jazz Day with Kat Parra, Sweet HayaH, and Basinah; these three regional artists pull from eclectic international flavors.

Kat Parra has leapt beyond the boundaries of the typical Latin Jazz singer. With her thirst for the exploration of world rhythms and tonalities, she has developed a style of music that encompasses sounds that both transcend and bend the stereotypical definition of Latin Jazz. Utilizing the rich and varied tonalities of Latin America, the Middle East and Spain, Parra has created an engaging and unique repertoire with fresh and exciting new arrangements. Parra sings fluently in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Ladino (Judeo-Espanyol). With this multi-lingual and multi-musical experience, Kat Parra is able to transport her audiences to an exciting and vibrant journey of World and Latin music. Tonight’s concert features an all-female band, including Michelle Pollace on piano, and Mary Fettig on woodwinds.

“Hayah” is the Arabic word for “life,” and when it comes to the poetic and fierce, enlightened and elegantly brash music of Sweet HayaH, this San Jose-based group well encompasses this music revitalization. Comprised of Nehal Abuelata, Devin Moreno, Josh Gardner, and Aaron Marquez, the band blends rock and soul music, melding funky world nuances, hard-hitting rhythm and blues beats within their passionate, spirited performances. The band is one of the Bay Area’s best independent bands in 2014; fresh from a 2013 West Coast tour, the band has already recorded their debut album, received rave reviews from local publications like Metro, and is working on a full-length acoustic album set for release this year. This performance will be an acoustic set, highlighting the spring debut of their soon-to-be-released acoustic album.

Basinah has been belly dancing for over a decade, and her style and transfixing grace has been noticed byaudiences across both coasts. She is a young, award-winning dancer who first learned the style as a birthday present. Fast-forward to present day, and dancing has become a part of her soul. She recently graduated from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and has been trained in Tahitian dance, Hula, and the exotic art of belly dance.

Fatale is a unique San Jose-based production house with a focus on female talent. By programming every Wednesday night at The Blackbird Tavern, this collective showcases over 20 female-based artists every month, about 300 ladies every year. This space for exchange cultivates an artistic renaissance in San Jose by inviting influential local, regional and international acts into The Blackbird Tavern, creating a key Downtown hub for music, poetry, comedy, spoken word, visual arts, live art, and much more.
