INTERMEDIATE DRAWINGTerry Powers8 sessions >> Saturdays, March 11-April 2911 am-2 pm, Studio 13, $350Prerequisite: Introduction to Drawing or similar experience.
Using your basic drawing vocabulary, materials, and techniques as a foundation, you will begin to investigate more conceptual aspects of drawing--focusing on personal artistic expression. Time will be spent at the beginning of the course with traditional observational drawings of still-lifes and the figure, and then move toward abstraction, and experimentation. Color will be introduced both formally and expressively. You will be encouraged to approach drawing in a variety of non-traditional ways including alternative mark-making, incorporation of text, drawing as documentation, and ephemeral drawings. In addition, you will be given a series of theoretical “problems†to solve and/or incorporate into each assignment as a guide to discovering multiple perspectives in drawing. Class projects and critiques will be focused on providing a continuation of observational and technical drawing skills, an introduction of new ideas and experimentation, and insight into discovering one’s own artistic voice.
___Terry Powers is a painter who lives and works in San Francisco. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and his MFA from Stanford University in 2013. What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. Materials lists are available approximately two weeks prior to the course start date. Visit the SFAI website here, click on your course title, and then click on the blue "Materials List" link underneath the course dates. If you have any questions regarding materials, please contact Public Education Staff.What are my transport/parking options getting to San Francisco Art Institute?All classes meet at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You can find directions to campus on the SFAI website.
SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.I have a question that isn't on this list. Who can I contact?SFAI Public Education Staff are always happy to answer any questions you may have about the Public Education program, or our courses.
