In That Case: Havruta in Contemporary Art

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Dialogue has always been an integral part of learning in traditional Jewish contexts. Now, The Contemporary Jewish Museum repurposes the centuries-old practice of havruta—the study of religious texts by people in pairs—for the contemporary art community. Artist Lindsey White collaborates with comedian Ron Lynch in the first showing of a new exhibition series, In That Case: Havruta in Contemporary Art.

In That Case: Havruta in Contemporary Art brings individual Bay Area artists together with a scholar, scientist, writer, or other thinker of his or her choice for a ten-week fellowship in creativity. The resulting collaborations will be presented in The Museum’s Sala Webb Education Center.

San Francisco-based artist Lindsey White is creating a type of sight-gag index, through video, photography, and sculpture, and working with the language of magic and comedy to present the unexpected and impossible in everyday life.

Ron Lynch is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. He has appeared in a number of movies and television shows and has worked as a voice actor for several animated shows.

Together White and Lynch will engage in a larger conversation about how to activate a joke and about the physical nature of being a performer.

In That Case: Havruta in Contemporary Art is organized by The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco.
