In Search of the Perfect Cup

SEE EVENT DETAILS
In addition to our Mud Months programming, SOMArts is piloting bimonthly ceramic curriculum for those looking to hone their clay skills. Classes are led by program director Matt Goldberg.
In Search of the Perfect Cup
What is it that makes a cup significant? In this class, we will address form, handles, size, thickness, texture, and glaze techniques in the search of a perfect cup. Contemporary and canonical ceramic artists will be examined throughout the course. We will investigate the anatomy of a cup, and how it transforms based on utility, geography, and class. The “cup” in the context of this class is a broad term encompassing any vessel, with or without function.
One note about wheel-throwing:
The SOMArts ceramic studio is geared towards handbuilding. We have one wheel. If you are interested in throwing, that is totally fine - but please recognize there is limited access and instruction for this discipline. If throwing is the main focus of your ceramic practice, there are a handful of great studios in the city set up to develop that skillset.
