Tonight we look away from the news (children in cages, walls and camps), and examine how fiction helps us understand the complexities of immigration and community. Bay Area authors Elaine Castillo (America is Not the Heart) and Shanthi Sekaran (Lucky Boy) discuss and share their work, set variously in the Philippines, Mexico, Berkeley, and Milpitas. Moderated by Angie Chau (Quiet As They Come).Elaine Castillo was born in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. America Is Not the Heart is her first novel.Shanthi Sekaran is author of the novels The Prayer Room and Lucky Boy. She teaches creative writing at California College of the Arts, and is a member of the Portuguese Artists Colony and the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Best New American Voices and Canteen, and online at Zyzzyva and Mutha Magazine. A California native, she lives in Berkeley with her husband and two children.Angie Chau (moderator) was born in Vietnam. She has also lived in Malaysia, Italy, Spain, Hawaii, and currently resides in California. She earned a BA in Southeast Asian Culture and Political Economy (ISF) from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master's degree in English with a Creative Writing emphasis from the University of California, Davis. Her work has appeared in the Indiana Review, Santa Clara Review, Night Train Magazine, and the Heyday Books anthology New California Writing. She is author of the novel Quiet As They Come, a finalist in First Fiction for The California Book Award and a finalist in Fiction for the Northern California Independent Booksellers Award.
