In this class we’ll work on a hand lettered phrase and incorporate illustrated elements. In 5 weeks students will go from brainstorming and thumbnailing concepts to completing a finished piece. Every step of the process will be guided with feed back and critique.
Student will be instructed on drawing letterforms, on spacing, composition, and hierarchy of their lettering, and bringing in illustration that elevates the lettering.
Class time will be mainly for instruction, exercises, group critique, and one on one feedback. Students will be expected to work on their project between class times.
No prior lettering or illustration experience is required.
Required Materials:
Tracing paper, Roll or pad (at least 11”x14”)
Drawing paper (at least 11”x14”)
Pencil
Eraser
Sharpies, both fine line, regular, and large and any other black pen desired
White correction fluid
X-acto blade
Scotch tape
Computer loaded with adobe photoshop (Free 30 day of photoshop available at Adobe.com)
Heather Hardison a letterer and illustrator in Berkeley, California. She was born and raised in North Carolina and graduated from College of Design at North Carolina State University in 2009, with a degree in Art & Design. After graduation, Heather moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue a creative career. In 2010 her food blog, Illustrated Bites, launched her illustration career. That same year, she began apprenticing at New Bohemia Signs, and worked as a sign painter for the last 5 years.
Heather is the proud book momma of Homegrown: Illustrated Bites from your Garden to your Table (Stewart, Tabori, and Chang 2015.) Homegrown is a fully illustrated guide to growing & cooking seasonal produce, which she wrote, illustrated, and designed.
