If All of This Were Silence

SEE EVENT DETAILS
1-5pm on Oct 5, 6, 13, 20, 27, Nov 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec 1 and 7

Kate Haug's "If All of This Were Silence" is an interactive installation that reflects the conflicting and radically varied ways women have strategized to control the impact of patriarchal culture on their lives.

Exhibition visitors will be able to explore "Permanent Library", a piece that displays hundreds of books written by women in a single room. "Permanent Library" documents women's diverse lived experience and includes everything from Angela Davis' powerful "Women, Race and Class" to the best-selling dating book "The Rules" by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider. The exhibition features a recording booth where visitors will be able to select and record passages from the "Permanent Library" to create an audio exquisite corpus. During the closing event, "The Big Take-Away," visitors will dismantle the exhibition by taking away what they like.

"If All of This Were Silence" is an ad-hoc assemblage that floods the gallery space with an expansive prism of material showing the breadth of women's strategic expression. Haug thinks of all the texts as various guides in which authors analyze their lived and historical experience, producing strategies for living as women in a patriarchal society.

The installation asks questions about how women can be heard, politically, in their difference; can women, an oppressed majority, create political, social and economic equality across the breadth of their experience?

The exhibition opens Saturday October 5, 2019, 1-5pm. The closing event "The Big Take-Away" will be held Saturday, December 7, 1-5pm. Additional public events will be announced.

A workshop for high school students relating to the exhibition titled, "The Future is Female" will be held at 826 Valencia Street. High schools students can register online at https://www.826valencia.org.
