Dutch flamenco guitarist Max Herzog will perform at the Haba na Haba House in Berkeley Sunday, April 21.
“Idiomas,” Herzog’s tribute to the unique diversity of flamenco music, will take place at 4 p.m. Herzog will be joined by fellow guitarist Corey Whitehead and Danica Sena and Mace Mamlok on percussion as part of a swing through California. The performance is being presented by Andanza Spanish Arts.
A graduate of the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he was taught by legendary flamenco master Paco Peña, Herzog has also studied under Manolo Sanlúcar, Paco Serrano, Manolo Franco, Gerardo Nuñez and Juan Manuel Cañizares. Herzog skillfully combines old and new flamenco guitar masterpieces with his own compositions, which reflect his study of jazz and classical music and allow room for improvisation.
During his intensive study under some of the greatest living guitar masters and his diverse work as a professional flamenco guitarist, Herzog has succeeded in developing a clear and authentic musical language inspired largely by the guitar styles of Cordoba and Cadiz. He regularly performs throughout Europe and works as a session musician with established artists from different musical genres.
“I try to translate what is going on inside me to the guitar and integrate it into the flamenco context,” says Herzog. “Flamenco has become the (musical) language that I speak. With the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years, I am, within the colours and shades of the flamenco guitar, searching for melodies and phrases that express what I want to convey, usually moods or something I have experienced. … But most of all, I am interested in freedom, and that is why improvisation plays a vital part in my approach to music. When I go on stage, I like to arrange the pieces in a way that leaves enough room for free improvisation. Dialogue between the instruments is also very important for me. Everyone I play with has their own story to tell, and that inspires me as well.”
The suggested donation is $25, which includes a light beverage and food. Seating is limited.
Haba na Haba House is located at 1936 Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Berkeley. To reserve tickets or for more information, call 510-527-2210.
