This double bill of Caribbean steel pan music is the first March installment of our ongoing “Think Globally, Dance Locally” series. Ashkenaz has been a celebrated home for music and dance from around the world for more than 40 years. Through “Think Globally, Dance Locally,” we are building on that history to bring more voices, more conversations, and more joy to more people in the Ashkenaz tradition of fostering intercultural peace and understanding.
The Humboldt Calypso Band features more than 40 players in the ultimate steelband, playing high-energy Caribbean dance hits from calypso classics to soca award-winners. Founded in 1986 by Dr. Eugene Novotney, who still leads the group, the Humboldt Calypso Band was the first ensemble of its kind in the entire California State University system. Based at Humboldt State University in Arcata, the touring group features current students and alumni in an orchestra of steel drums, or more accurately, steel pans.
The band is dedicated to the performance of traditional and contemporary music from the Caribbean, Africa, Brazil, and the U.S. It prides itself in maintaining an accurate and authentic connection to the roots of the steelband movement and the innovative musicians of Trinidad and Tobago, the island nation that created and developed this unique percussion phenomenon. Over its nearly 30-year existence, the band has developed a relationship with some of Trinidad & Tobago’s most important steelband composers, most notably Ray Holman and Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, who have written many of the arrangements and original scores that the group performs. In addition to the ensemble’s regular performances at Humboldt State University and throughout Northern California, it has undertaken tours from Seattle to San Diego.
The SF Panhandlers are a nationally acclaimed steel pan band based in San Mateo. Under the direction of Jim Munzenrider, this group has been entertaining audiences throughout Northern California since 1987. With an extensive repertoire of traditional socas, calypsos, beguines, and other Caribbean styles, the Panhandlers have become a mainstay at a number of Bay Area events from the San Francisco AIDS Walk to the day-long annual Pan in the Schools Jamboree. In 2002, the group became the “unofficial steel band” of the San Francisco Giants, when they were invited to perform at the playoffs and World Series at Pacific Bell Park. Their four CDs feature original tunes by renowned composers, fresh arrangements of classics, and innovative treatments of popular songs.
