rapping in the name of interfaith tolerance

Presented by The Osher Marin JCC
Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013: 7pm
200 North San Pedro Rd. San Rafael

“In a cross-generational, genre-blending art form, Yuri Lane combines impressive beatboxing skills with versatile harmonica playing to produce a sound unlike any other.”
- PopMatters

Human beatbox and vocal magician Yuri Lane will present his "coolly extraordinary" travelogue of peace, From Tel Aviv to Ramallah: A Beatbox Journey. Part hip-hop performance, part street-wise documentary, Lane’s play weaves a vox-pop tapestry of Palestinian and Israeli voices into a mosaic of the Middle East.

Against a backdrop of live visuals by Sharif Ezzat, muezzin calls and Tel Aviv traffic, the lives of Khalid and Amir—one Israeli, one Palestinian—progress and intertwine with a hip-hop beat despite their being separated by military border crossings. Lane’s performances have been featured in top media outlets including USA Today, New York Times, and Chicago Tribune, and in music magazines, Afropop Worldwide and Pop Matters. Nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for best new play, the show has enjoyed runs in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Baltimore, Atlanta, across the US and internationally, including in Helsinki, London and Jerusalem. Yuri Lane continues to electrify audiences worldwide.

The program is part of the Osher Marin JCC’s series, “Salaam, Shalom: Speaking of Peace” series, events designed to increase interfaith dialogue and understanding.

More on Yuri Lane
Yuri Lane’s passion for hip-hop started as a kid growing up in San Francisco the 80's, when he started breakdancing and teaching moves at middle school parties. But he didn’t discover his true calling until sixth grade math class, when Yuri made sounds to compensate for his lack of arithmetic skill. When his teacher ordered him to "turn off the radio," Yuri knew that he was on to something.

While attending high school at the San Francisco School of the Arts, Yuri acted in plays at the San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater and Berkeley Repertory Theater. After training with the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Yuri returned to San Francisco to pursue mime, improvisation and alternative theatrical forms—and a few stints as a television actor. He created and stars in two plays that tour the country, Soundtrack City (a one-man hip-hop play in which a street harmonica player on the brink of homelessness takes us on a journey through Chicago) and From Tel Aviv to Ramallah, which he created with his partner Sharif Ezzat and his wife Rachel Havrelock.

In fall 2007, Yuri’s extraordinary talent reached worldwide fame when his beatbox harmonica video shot to number one on YouTube with over nine million views (and counting). This led to live beatbox performances at Google parties around the world, several commercials and the formation of a YouTube community bound by beatbox.

writer-director Rachel Havrelock and performer Yuri Lane have fashioned

“‘Vocal magician’ Yuri Lane reworks the biblical story of Abraham's sons Isaac and Ishmael in a panoply of Middle Eastern voices.” – SF Weekly
