New Century Chamber Orchestra returns to the stage in the New Year with "Hope Leads Appalachian Spring" featuring works from the mid-20th century that shaped the American sound for a new generation, headlined by Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite for 13 instruments. American soprano Leah Hawkins makes her New Century debut performing as soloist for a collection of songs highlighting influential voices from the Harlem Renaissance, including We Have Tomorrow and Hold Fast to Dreams by Florence Price, Songs of Separation by William Grant Still, Come Sunday by Duke Ellington and "Chloe's Aria" from Voodoo by Harry Lawrence Freeman. Also featured on the program is Rounds for Strings by David Diamond and a Florence Price work for violin and strings entitled Adoration with Music Director Daniel Hope performing as soloist.
Described by The Washington Post as "vocally and dramatically impressive," Leah Hawkins is a recent alumna of the prestigious Lindemann Young Artist Development at the Metropolitan Opera and has performed all over the world with opera companies such as the Portland Opera, Tulsa Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg as well as orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, and Colorado Symphony. Most recently she made her Met Opera debut as the Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess and Masha in The Queen of Spades. Regarding her performance in Porgy and Bess, New York Classical Review said "barely a minute and a half of music, she stopped the show" with Parterre Box similarly stating that she "turned the Strawberry Woman's tiny vignette into a literal show-stopping moment."
$30 to $67.50.
