Holly Penfield, born in Berkeley and now a luminary of the London music scene, brings a night of her highly original music - and new album, TREE WOMAN, to The Back Room.
“With TREE WOMAN, I’m returning to my roots, geographically and musically,” declares Holly, who began her career as a rock singer-songwriter in the East Bay. She performed at venues including Freight & Salvage and the Keystone Berkeley, playing with such notables as John Lee Hooker and Eddie Money. She went on to develop a vibrant versatility in the heart of London, encompassing jazz, standards and pop - alongside her own original music, which she views as "re-inventions of entertainment and survival."
Penfield is a force of nature, so TREE WOMAN is an apt title for her new show. Her deep-rooted love for self expression has grown into full bloom, spreading branches of her strong original songs intertwined with tendrils of tender ballads, and twigs of gypsy jazz.
Holly will be on keyboards, backed by a rock band. Songs include “Misfit,” “Last Enemy,” “In Your Arms,” “Diggin' It," “Don’t Bang on the Piano,” and "A Rose and a Rope.”
Her solo show, Fragile Human Monster, played in London during March 2018, earning rave reviews:
“Two sold-out shows Live at Zedel and an audience pleading for more speaks volumes…Holly Penfield dazzled, performing a collection of amazing originals, and held the audience in thrall with her unique style and arresting costumes.” – Helen Theophanous, London
Says Holly, “Being back in Berkeley where I began my career feels very right at this time in my life - coming full circle! Berkeley gave me my start as a rock chick, and I’m still connected to my friends and supporters here. I am really looking forward to sharing my new show and album TREE WOMAN – and I think that my musical growth rings will be visible!”
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).
