History Journal #7 explores the cultural history of the Santa Cruz Mountains redwoods from the time of the first peoples to the present day. This history, split between the interests of loggers and conservationists, is examined through the human response to the redwood forest: from the Native Peoples, who saw redwoods as an integral part of their cultural landscape, through the first settlers, who recognized the timber value in redwoods, to the imaginative few who realized redwoods were an irreplaceable resource. New research and previously unpublished material from local authors is brought together in this highly readable journal.
