re.riddle is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition and launch, Here is Where We Meet. The multimedia exhibition will showcase the manifestations of a conceptual dialogue between artists Summer Lee and Nathan Goldsmith during a period of ten months. Themes emerging from their exchange relate to notions of intimacy, relationships and private/public identity. Here is Where We Meet will be on view May 1 - June 1, 2017. The opening reception will be held Friday, May 5 from 5 - 8pm.
re.riddle is a provocative new exhibition platform that will present quarterly shows showcased in site-specific exhibitions and ephemeral events. With a primary focus on constructing narratives that are thought provoking, playful and fluid, re.riddle's exhibitions aim to pique one's curiosity with delight and whimsy.
Here is Where We Meet examines the theoretical space and juncture occupied by artists Summer Lee and Nathan Goldsmith during a creative collaboration. The exhibition explores the notion of “shared space” as being one that is inhabited by subjectivity, projections and nuanced tensions that occur when the individual and collective confront each other. Situated in different parts of the country -- Lee in Chicago and Goldsmith in San Francisco -- curator re.riddle engaged the artists to learn about each another through the exchange and interpretation of art making. Lee and Goldsmith were invited to participate in this project because of their distinct stylistic, cultural and geographic backgrounds, thereby allowing for a more multifaceted, dynamic correspondence. The result is a dialogue involving sketches, written memories, photography, audio and visual recordings and ideas that crystallized into tangible artworks.
The exhibition will be organized in three chapters – Chapter One “autobiography”; Chapter Two “let’s take a walk” and; Chapter Three - “the notion of we”. Prompts were given to Lee and Goldsmith for each chapter that provided inspiration for art making. The resulting artworks range from cyanotype on fabric, multimedia painting and sculpture, large-scale installations and video performance. Ultimately, Lee and Goldsmith’s artistic discourse poses its own prompt to the audience - to re-examine our pre-existing ideas about intimacy/connection, separation/distance in relationships as well as private vs. public identity.
