Every Wednesday Johnny V's Cypher series brings impressive names from the national underground hip-hop scene to San Jose. This week they have a double headliner: Baltimore rapper Height (from "Height and Friends") and San Francisco producer Al Lover. Height is an offbeat, eccentric rapper with a flow that owes a major debt to hip-hop's first wave (Sugar Hill Gang, Kurtis Blow). He's been touring the country the past decade with such diverse names as the Animal Collective, Dan Deacon and Grand Buffet. Al Lover, on the other hand, produces some way-out-there psychedelic, experimental beats. He recently produced a garage-rock remix album, taking songs by Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees and transforming them into weirdo instrumental hip-hop dance tracks. (Aaron Carnes)
