Barefoot Chamber Concert presents The New Esterhazy Quartet playing Haydn's setting of "The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross" in a performance similar to the original setting.
Commissioned in 1783 for the Good Friday service in Cadiz, the work consists of a prelude, then seven slow movements, each written to correspond to one of the seven last words of Jesus Christ on the cross. In keeping with the original performance, the music is separated by brief readings selected by the Very Reverend Alan Jones, Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral.
Seven candles will be lit. At the conclusion of each section, a candle will be extinguished and the event will conclude in darkness.
