Hannu Rajaniemi at The Interval: The Spirit Singularity

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Interval at Long Now welcomes
Hannu Rajaniemi
The Spirit Singularity: Science and the Afterlife at the Turn of the 20th Century
In the late Victorian era, scientists, inventors, revolutionaries, misfits, and ordinary people set out to map the afterlife. In a tour of obscure ideas and bizarre inventions, we will learn about spirit-powered sewing machines, aetheric knots, and the four-dimensional geometry of Lenin’s tomb—and what they tell us about our current obsession with intelligent machines and immortality.

This history helped inspire Summerland, Hannu's latest book (his first in 4 years). His celebrated Jean le Flambeur trilogy began with his debut novel The Quantum Thief.
Check-in begins 6:30pm; talk starts at 7:30pm at The Interval at Long Now
Thanks to Borderlands Books who will have Hannu's books on sale; he will sign after the talk.
"A jaw-dropping, knowing, hyperintelligent yarn."— Kirkus on Summerland

“The best first SF novel I've read in years. Hard to admit, but I think he's better at this stuff than I am.”?Charles Stross on The Quantum Thief
