Halcyonaire: Following his roots away from punk and thrash and into the loving arms of Americana-tinged indie folk is what turned singer/songwriter Chris Damien into Halcyonaire. Halcyonaire, an Oakland band that migrated from the ocean-side paradise of San Diego, has been making stomping folk since at 2010. At first, the intricate, folksy tracks were Damien's solo vehicle, with his voice holding everything together. But as time passed, he realized (as so many artists do) that you can only fly solo for so long. Joined by his hometown friends Brandt, Geoff, and Joel, Halcyonaire became a complete sonic being. Fans of Langhorne Slim will enjoy the upbeat blues-informed country numbers, and the band's more recent art filled musical experiments will appeal to just about any music lover. Damien's sultry, country-ramble voice is the focal point of each song, but horns, sharp guitar work (both acoustic and electric), lyrics about loneliness, and faraway sounding drums evoke a solo road trip through the California desert. Beautifully designed art appropriately supports Halcyonaire's bohemian country vibe -- and the boys themselves ain't too shabby either. Live, each member is a frantic portrait of a California boy doing what he loves; and when they harmonize, you won't be able to fight the butterflies in your stomach.
